Olivier Leflaive Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Champ Gain 2023 75cl.

The Olivier Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Champ Gain" 2023 is one of the finest, most airy and elegant expressions within the range of First Crus of the maison. Coming from the Champ Gain estate, located in the upper part of the Puligny slope, bordering Blagny, this wine stands out for its alpine freshness, its marked mineral tension and an outstanding balance that perfectly reflects the character of the 2023 vintage in Burgundy

Champ Gain is located at the top of the denomination. Receiving fresh winds and balanced sunshine, the grapes ripen ideally slowly, preserving vibrant acidity and unmistakable floral aromatic purity. A generous and extremely balanced vintage in the Côte de Beaune. After years of reduced yields, 2023 provided excellent volume and impeccable health, giving the Chardonnay bright fruit, great tactile finesse and a backbone of very lively freshness.

Winemaking

Grapes: 100% Chardonnay

100% manual harvesting of whole bunches collected in 13 kg perforated boxes to protect the integrity of the fruit and prevent oxidation.

Progressive and delicate pressing of whole clusters. The must goes through a cold static decantation process (débourbage) for 12 to 24 hours to clean it of thick lees. Natural fermentation with indigenous yeasts in French oak barrels. The wine biologically completes 100% of the malolactic fermentation to round out its texture.

Aging for more than a year in French oak barrels (with a moderate use of 25% new wood) and lees stirring (bâtonnage) controlled at the beginning.

The wine is transferred to stainless steel tanks during the last months prior to bottling by gravity, allowing the batch to be assembled and enhancing its citrus and mineral profile.

Tasting notes

View:

Pale golden yellow with a dazzling clarity and deep greenish and steely reflections that demonstrate the vitality, freshness and excellent aging potential of the 2023 vintage. Totally crystalline, shiny and resplendent appearance in the glass, a reflection of rigorous production and extremely clean pressing. Dense, fluid and glyceric tears. When you gently shake the glass, it descends slowly and uniformly, heralding the volume, aristocratic structure and concentration typical of a high-slope Premier Cru.

Nose:

Great spaciousness, ethereal and with overwhelming aromatic purity. It unfolds with complete directness from the first moment, without heaviness, showing the alpine elegance characteristic of Champ Gain. Absolute dominance of delicate white wild flowers (acacia, orange blossom and jasmine). Notes of stone fruit and crunchy pip intertwine, highlighting Williams pear, pippin apple and a sparkling nuance of white grapefruit peel and fresh lime. With restrained use of new oak (around 25%), the wood acts as a subtle couture frame. Providing fine nuances of toasted hazelnut, fresh butter, a subtle touch of warm brioche and a very slight echo of sweet spices. The great protagonist of the nose is its deep calcareous substrate. Notes of wet chalk, flint stone (silex), flint and a subtle salt breeze that provides a very marked vertical and austere dimension emerge clearly.

Mouth:

Wide, direct, vibrant and very punchy entry that envelops the palate with a luminous and stimulating energy. It develops an unctuous, silky and full-bodied texture, where the generosity of the 2023 vintage is perfectly balanced with a backbone of very lively citric acidity. A perfect harmony is perceived between the ripeness of the fruit and the vertical freshness of the payment. It displays impeccable linear architecture; It is not a heavy wine, but a Premier Cru of great tension, nerve and an outstanding tactile elegance that fills the mouth without saturating it. Extraordinarily long, deep and persistent finish, which lasts for several minutes, leaving a sensation of total cleanliness and harmony on the palate. Upon expiration, memories of candied citrus zest, toasted nuts and a long, austere and markedly saline echo of chalk and limestone reappear with intensity that immediately invites a new sip.
